Summary

This report focuses on free-to-air digital TV platforms and retail set-top box opportunities within digital terrestrial TV (DTT) platforms and free-to-air (FTA) satellite platforms (DBS). Forecasts are provided by region for terrestrial and FTA satellite households and set-top boxes, along with country ASO goals.

The transition from analog to digital (digitization) has been ongoing for years, with significant milestones already reached in North America and Western Europe (for terrestrial). Both the United States and Canada completed their analog terrestrial shutoff (ASO) in 2009 (mostly) and 2011 respectively, while most Western European countries satisfied the European Union¡¯s 2012 goal.

Other regions/countries are starting or are well along in the process towards reaching the next significant ASO milestone which is currently set for 2015 (established by the ITU). The landscape for digital terrestrial in particular is dynamic as some countries will meet their ASO goals, while for others these dates will come and go. DVB-T2 will also play an increasing role among countries that started the digitization process later and those looking to expand and/or upgrade services.
